MDS and MPN Awareness Days

September 26, 2023

Unifying Voices: MDS and MPN Awareness Days - Empowering Patients with Knowledge and Shining a Light on Rare Blood Cancers

In the realm of healthcare awareness, there are days that resonate deeply with individuals and communities affected by rare diseases. Two such days are MDS World Awareness Day, observed every October 25th, and MPN Awareness Day, celebrated on the second Thursday of September each year; in 2023 this falls on September 14th. These days are a call to action, an opportunity to unite and shine a light on two distinct but equally important conditions—myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN).

MPN Awareness Day–September 14th

The MPN Hub and MPN Patient Advocacy Group (PAG) observed this year's MPN Awareness Day on September 14th. This day serves as a vital platform to educate the public about MPN, encourage early detection and diagnosis, promote research into new treatments and cures, and raise awareness of the unique challenges faced by people living with MPNs and their families.

MPN Awareness Day serves as a vital platform to achieve several important goals:

  1. Educate the public: The day is designed to educate the public about MPN, their symptoms, and the available treatment options. Knowledge is the first step toward early detection and diagnosis.
  2. Promote early detection: By fostering awareness, we hope to encourage early detection and diagnosis of MPN. Early intervention can make a significant difference in quality of life for individuals living with these conditions.
  3. Support research: The fight against MPN continues, and research into new treatments and potential cures is ongoing. MPN Awareness Day encourages individuals to contribute to this critical research.
  4. Raise awareness: Beyond the medical aspects, MPN Awareness Day serves as a reminder of the unique challenges faced by individuals living with MPN and their families. It is a day of solidarity and understanding.

MDS World Awareness Day–October 25th

This day would not be possible without the dedicated efforts of the MDS Alliance and its member groups worldwide. Their mission is to educate the public about MDS, increase awareness among healthcare professionals, and drive research towards new treatments and cures.

MDS World Awareness Day

In 2023, the theme of MDS World Awareness Day is "MDS: Know Your Options." This theme underscores the importance of empowering patients and their families with information about the diverse treatment options available to them. MDS is not a one-size-fits-all disease, and the optimal treatment strategy varies from one individual to another, depending on factors such as age, overall health, and the specific type of MDS. The MDS Hub would like to encourage all its users to get involved and share the campaign on October 25th.

A Unified Call to Action

Together, through education, early detection, research support, and solidarity, we can make a significant difference in the lives of people affected by these rare blood disorders. Join us on September 14th for MPN Awareness Day and October 25th for MDS World Awareness Day to stand together in the spirit of understanding, support, and hope for a brighter future for those affected by MDS and MPN.

Let's make both awareness days a testament to our collective commitment to making a difference.
